You do one thing bad like shoplifting (or having sex in a culture where premarital sex is greatly frowned upon) in one unhealthy relationship and all of a sudden it’s now something you have done, it’s part of your possible reality.
If you do not address this and work on forgiving yourself, you are more likely to do this action again because:
1 – You are desensitized to that action and it’s no longer taboo.
2 – You feel guilt and/or shame for doing it and you feel that you are less of a good person than you used to be so you expect less of yourself in the future; or even worse you begin to believe that you do not deserve to have a relationship with a good guy again because you are no longer “good,” you are not worthy.

Forgiveness:
It’s not saying “It’s okay.”
It’s saying, “It’s not okay, it will never be okay. But I don’t want it controlling my life anymore. I am letting go of the hold it has on my life, on my mind, on my heart. I am moving forward.”
