With the Olympics under way, I got ice skating on my mind. Ice skating contains a great metaphor for life: the balance between the technical and the artistic—the two factors on which a skater is scored. On the one hand, there are rules to life, aspects that are mandatory within it. On the other hand, once one has succeeded in covering the obligatory aspects, there is additional room for free-flow creativity and self-expression. Have only the technical down, and life will likely be tasteless and boring. Focus only on the artistic end, and life can become chaotic and unsustainable. The art of it all is truly discovering how to balance these two dimensions of life: the technical and the artistic.
