Board Games Not Bored

It’s not everyday that the pieces on a board game so effectively illustrate a metaphor for life. And while it may not be as notable as Halley’s comet, I’m noting it nonetheless.

As my five-year-old daughter and I were playing Trouble earlier this week, I couldn’t help but notice the position of my pieces.

They were all out.

Exposed. Vulnerable.

If you can make out the number that was just rolled (or more accurately, popped!), it’s a four. Which means one of my pieces is about to get sent home. Darn!

Except maybe it’s not so bad. Cuz I’ve found the secret to getting through times like these is to indeed return home. To ground, to center, to restore (such as through meditation, relaxing music, or a walk in nature). Don’t get me wrong, I love completing projects. And I strive to make it to the safety of the Finish line.

But, I gotta be realistic, right?

The road to success can be an arduous one, and thus touching home is a great way to recenter and recoup.

More Adulting metaphors here.
